What is Test and Tag?

Test and Tag is used to ensure all portable electrical appliances are safe to use. First, the appliance is visually inspected to ensure there’s no wear or damage that could compromise the safety, then it is electrically tested using a Portable Appliance Tester. After the testing, the appliance is marked as safe, and a tag is fixed onto it showing details of who did the test, when it was done and when it needs to be done again.

The AS/NZS 3760 is the Australian Standard that provides guidelines and regulations for the Test and Tag industry with regards to the electrical safety of appliances. It sets out recommendations for issues such as Test and Tag intervals, defines who can Test and Tag along with general procedural guidelines.

Who needs to Test and Tag?

Industries such as mining, demolition, and construction, where equipment is likely to get damaged or worn very quickly, are required by law to Test and Tag every three months. Other industries are not subject to this type of legislation, but employees are expected to honour their duty of care to their employees. This means that if an employee were hurt by a faulty workplace appliance, they could have grounds to claim compensation, and so Test and Tag is essential. For companies that hire out equipment, there is an obligation to have equipment tested every 3 months.

How often should appliances undergo a Test and Tag?

Regulations around the frequency of Test and Tag services vary in accordance with the environment the appliance is in, and guidelines are set out by the Australian Standards. Our experienced team can offer guidance, just give us a call on 0416 287 984 or fill in our contact form.

Who is allowed to test and tag?

Test and Tag services must be carried out by competent persons – those who have taken, and passed, a Test and Tag course.

What sort of things need to be tested and tagged?

Anything that has a flex, removable plug and is not low voltage needs to be tested and tagged. This includes things like kettles, irons and toasters as well as things like electric drills and hairdryers.
