Smoke alarm installation solutions
We put safety first at John McEwan Electrical, which is why we’ll always come out to install a smoke alarm when you ask us to. We use only the highest quality of photoelectric smoke alarms as per NSW regulations, to give you and your family the best possible level of protection.
If you’re unsure how many smoke alarms you’ll need for your property, here’s a rough guide:
- 1 bedroom: 2 alarms
- 2 bedrooms: 3 alarms
- 3 bedrooms: 4 alarms
- 4 bedrooms: 6 alarms
Of course, when you book smoke alarm installation, a member of our friendly team will discuss the specifics with you in more detail. We’ll also provide a bespoke quote based on your appointment, such as the number of smoke alarms required and the number of storeys within your property.
NSW smoke alarm laws
Having functional smoke alarms isn’t just recommended – it’s also a legal obligation. The current NSW smoke alarm laws apply to all domestic dwellings, including those that are undergoing renovations and those being rented out. In accordance with the latest laws, smoke alarms must:
- Be installed in each bedroom
- Be photoelectric type only
- Be installed in hallways serving bedrooms
- Be hard wired to the electricity supply
- Be interconnected to every other smoke alarm in the house
- Be installed in the exit path of every storey not containing bedrooms
Please note too that the latest regulations state that all smoke alarms within a property should be less than 10 years old. If your smoke alarms are older than this, you will need to update your systems to a new photoelectric smoke alarm.
If you have concerns about whether your existing setup is fulfilling legal obligations, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team and ask for advice. We’ll be happy to talk you through the regulations in more detail and, if necessary, get you booked in for a new smoke alarm installation so you can have complete confidence.
